# Your Next Customer Is an AI Agent. Is Your Website Ready?

Twenty percent of inbound customer contact volume will come from machine customers by next year — not a person browsing your site, but an AI agent reading it on someone else's behalf.¹ Eighty percent of CEOs already believe AI will force a rebuild of how their business operates.² And on some major retail sites, traffic from generative AI tools has grown by as much as 1,200 to 4,700 percent in a single year, as shoppers stop typing into search bars and start asking an assistant instead.¹

That's not a distant trend. It's happening on the same website you're reading this on, right now, every time ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or Gemini answers a question about a business like yours. The question worth asking isn't whether AI agents are coming. It's whether your website can actually be *used* by one.

## The Death of the Screen-Based Funnel

For twenty years, "optimizing" a website meant optimizing it for a human: persuasive copy, an appealing layout, a checkout flow designed around psychology and trust signals. That still matters. But a new kind of visitor has entered the picture, and it doesn't respond to any of it.

Machine customers — the AI agents now researching, comparing, and increasingly transacting on behalf of real people — are immune to the tricks that move humans. Decoy pricing, urgency banners, beautifully art-directed photography: none of it registers. An agent optimizes for one thing — successfully completing the task it was given — using logic, structured data, and verifiable facts.³ A gorgeous homepage that an agent can't parse is, to that agent, invisible.

## How an AI Agent Actually Decides What to Recommend

Traditional search engines rank pages using backlinks, keywords, and how long humans stick around on a page. Generative engines work completely differently. When someone asks an AI assistant a question, the agent breaks that question into smaller pieces, retrieves the most relevant information it can find across the web, and synthesizes a single answer — usually with a handful of citations.⁴

That process rewards a very specific kind of content: dense, fact-rich, clearly structured, and easy to extract without stitching together sentences from three different paragraphs. It's a fundamentally different game than ranking ten blue links.

## What the Research Actually Shows Moves the Needle

Princeton researchers studied this directly, running over 10,000 queries to measure what makes content more likely to get cited by a generative engine.⁵ A few findings stand out because they're specific enough to act on immediately:

- Including relevant, authoritative quotations increased visibility by **41 percent**.
- Adding dense, verifiable statistics improved visibility by **32 percent**.
- Citing outside authoritative sources within your own content boosted visibility by **30 percent**.
- Writing for fluency and clarity — not keyword density — improved visibility by **28 percent**.
- Keyword stuffing, the old SEO reflex, actually made content **10 percent less likely** to be cited compared to doing nothing at all.

That last point is worth sitting with. The tactic an entire industry built itself around for two decades now actively hurts you with the audience that's growing the fastest.

## Where Most Businesses Are Failing Today

We built Agent Klarity's audit engine around four layers of what actually makes a site usable by an AI agent — can it be reached (Crawlability), can it be found (Accessibility), can it be read (Readability), and can it be *acted on* (Executability). That last layer checks for something genuinely new: whether a site exposes a live Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, the emerging standard that lets an agent not just read your site but actually call real tools on it — check inventory, calculate shipping, book an appointment.⁶

Here's the honest state of the industry right now: almost nobody has this yet. When we activated real checks for it, the overwhelming majority of the sites we've audited score a plain "not yet" — not a failure, just evidence of how early this still is. That's not a reason to ignore it. It's the opposite. The handful of sites that already expose one stand out immediately, the same way having a working robots.txt file stood out in 1998.

## What To Do About It

None of this requires throwing out your marketing. It requires adding a second, parallel discipline on top of it — one built for a reader that can't see your photography and doesn't care about your color palette, only whether it can extract a straight answer.

That starts with knowing where you actually stand. Agent Klarity runs a free, automated audit against the same framework described above — crawlability, accessibility, readability, and executability — and hands back a plain 0-100 score along with the specific, prioritized fixes behind it, most of which are a copy-paste of generated code, not a redesign.
